The state Department of Education-sponsored “Regents Physician Loan Forgiveness Award” is available to New York licensed physicians (MDs and DOs), New York state residents and legally able to work in the United States.
Awards are for up to $10,000 per year with a minimum two-year commitment to practice medicine in a Regents-designated shortage area. Many shortage areas also correspond with Health Professional Shortage Area and Medically Underserved Area designations.
The key requirement is that a physician who applies for the repayment award must be within two years of completing a qualifying residency program or have completed a residency program not more than five years before applying. Applications must be postmarked by June 1. More information is available here.
Physicians who receive loan-repayment through another state program or the National Health Service Corps cannot receive the Regents award.
