These designations, known as Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs), open the door to benefits such as federal and state funded student loan repayment programs and grants for physicians, advanced practitioners, and nurses. The goal of this initiative is to promote access to quality healthcare in the surrounding service area by recruiting and retaining clinicians like you. What is a HPSA?
HPSAs are designations that indicate health care provider shortages in three platforms of health: primary care, mental health, and dental health. Each platform of health receives its own designation. Each designation is scored to show the severity of the shortage. Scores range from 0 to 25, with 25 having the greatest shortage. What do these loan repayment programs offer?
Nurse Corps Loan Repayment Program – Advanced Practice Nurses and Registered Nurses may be eligible to apply for loan repayment worth up to 85% off their student loan balance in return for working at a Critical Shortage Facility, like our hospital.
National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Loan Repayment Program – Primary Care Professionals may be eligible for up to $75,000 and Mental Health or Dental Health Professionals may be eligible for up to $50,000, plus a one-time Spanish language award enhancement of $5,000, in return for a 2-year service commitment at an NHSC-certified site. One-year extension contracts are available for the remaining student loan balance.
New York State Primary Care Service Corps Loan Repayment Program – This program awards up to $72,000 for Dentists, $54,000 for Primary Care APPs, and $36,000 for all other eligible clinicians in return for a 3-year full-time service commitment at sites that have already received National Health Service Corps (NHSC) certification. Eligible professions include Dentists, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Certified Nurse Midwives, Clinical Psychologists, Licensed Clinical Social Workers, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists, Licensed Mental Health Counselors, and Dental Hygienists.
New York Regents Physician Loan Forgiveness Program – Open to Physicians (MD/DO) working in designated shortage areas in New York. Awards are up to $20,000 for a 2-year service commitment at an eligible practice site.
Doctors Across New York (DANY) Loan Repayment Program – Open to New York State licensed Physicians (MD/DO) in good standing, working in one of the following specialties: General Internal Medicine, Family Practice, General Pediatrics, Geriatrics, OB/GYN, or Psychiatry. NYS awards up to $120,000 for a 3-year commitment.
Nurses Across New York (NANY) Loan Repayment Program – Eligible nurses must be licensed in New York State as either a Registered Nurse or a Licensed Practical Nurse. Awards up to $25,000 for RNs and up to $10,000 for LPNs in return for a 3-year service commitment.
New York Licensed Social Worker Loan Forgiveness Program – Offers up to $6,500 annually, with a maximum award of $26,000 over four years or until the loan balance is paid in full, whichever is lesser. This program is open to NYS Licensed Social Workers who have qualifying service in a critical human service area as designated by NYS. Cattaraugus County is an eligible county for this program.
Pennsylvania Primary Care Loan Repayment Program – This competitive program offers up to $80,000 in loan repayment for primary care and mental health Physicians, Dentists, and Psychologists, and up to $48,000 for Nurse Practitioners, Certified Nurse Midwives, Physician Assistants, Licensed Clinical Social Workers, Licensed Professional Counselors, Marriage and Family Therapists, Registered Dental Hygienists, and Public Health Dental Hygiene Practitioners. The loan repayment is in exchange for a 2-year service commitment.
